The Merkers Crystal Marathon is one of Europe’s most extraordinary running events, staged 500 meters underground in the tunnels of the Erlebnisbergwerk Merkers near Eisenach, Germany. Constant conditions of 21°C, illuminated salt chambers, and the surreal atmosphere of a working mine create a running experience unlike any other.

The course consists of a 3.25 km lap winding through mining tunnels, covered 13 times for the full marathon or 7 times for the half marathon. Each lap features about 60 meters of elevation gain and descent, making the race both challenging and unforgettable. With only 750 runners accepted, the event maintains an intimate yet electrifying atmosphere.

Cut-off rules ensure safety and fairness:

- Marathoners must complete 39 km (12 laps) within 4h45 to continue to the final lap.
- Half marathoners must complete 19.8 km (6 laps) within 3h to stay in the race.
- Participants who stop earlier are recorded in half marathon results (outside of official competition).

Special requirements add to the adventure:

- Helmet and lamp are mandatory underground. Organizers recommend a cycling helmet and a headlamp; without them, participation is not possible.
- The surface is compact salt, mostly smooth like asphalt, but with occasional rough sections similar to fine gravel.
- The race is electronically timed, with net times recorded per lap via transponder.

Logistics and facilities:

- Bib pickup is at the Erlebnisbergwerk Merkers foyer from 07:30 until 09:00. Allow ~20 minutes to descend underground via lift, truck shuttle, and a short walk.
- Free parking is available nearby, and bus access is possible via Bad Salzungen.
- Toilets and refreshment points are located both underground and on the surface. Aid stations offer water, cola, fruit, energy gels, and even German-style snacks like bread with fat and pickles.
- Changing and shower facilities are available above ground after the race.
- Companions can purchase separate tickets to visit the underground venue during the event.

More than just a test of endurance, the Kristallmarathon is a surreal adventure — combining sport, history, and the unique thrill of racing deep beneath the earth’s surface.
