The International Crete Marathon is a cultural and, above all, athletic event held in Chania since 2016. It is included in the official sports event calendar of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS). The marathon is dedicated to the late Metropolitan Irenaeus Galanakis, who made significant religious, humanitarian, and social contributions to Crete.

The 10 km Road Race is dedicated to Hero Squadron Leader Kostas Iliakis, who sacrificed his life defending Greek airspace.

For the 9th Crete Marathon, the 5 km Road Race is dedicated to the renowned composer Mikis Theodorakis, while the 2.5 km Road Race is incorporated into the Values of Volunteering initiative.
