Sandsjöbacka Trail

Sandsjöbacka Trail 2027 is a winter trail-running weekend built around wild terrain, low-season atmosphere, and the feeling of moving through protected Scandinavian landscape rather than racing through a city. The current official English race page lists a three-distance format with 50 km on Saturday and 37 km plus 89 km on Sunday, with starts in Kungsbacka and at Tjolöholm Castle. What makes the event distinctive is the way each route is designed as a journey through different faces of the Sandsjöbacka area: pre-dawn starts, short hard-surface transitions into trail, technical forest paths, open drumlin terrain, and longer stretches that become more demanding as the race unfolds.

This is not a polished “fast trail” built around easy rhythm. Official race materials emphasize GPX-based navigation support, mandatory equipment, and a reserve environment that covers about 4,182 hectares, has been protected since 1968, and forms part of the EU Natura 2000 network. The event also stands out for its environmental positioning: Sandsjöbacka Trail says it was the first trail race to partner with Trail Cred to balance the climate impact of the race and participant travel by contributing to old-growth forest protection. Together, those elements give Sandsjöbacka Trail a clear identity: a serious but atmospheric winter trail experience for runners who want variety, self-reliance, and a race that feels closely tied to the landscape it passes through.
