Terra de Gigantes – Portugal East to West 2027 is an extreme point-to-point ultramarathon that takes runners across Portugal from the country’s highest mainland mountain area to the Atlantic coast. The 2027 edition is scheduled for 14–17 January 2027 and covers 303.8 km with 10,815 m of elevation gain, starting at Torre, Serra da Estrela / Seia and finishing in Nazaré. The route is run in self-sufficiency between life bases, with GPS navigation, a 74-hour time limit, and mixed terrain that turns the race into far more than a long-distance run: it is a multi-day endurance crossing shaped by mountains, forests, countryside, and the changing landscapes of Portugal from east to west.
What makes Terra de Gigantes especially distinctive is the scale of the journey and the feeling of progression built into the course. Independent race listings describe it as a traverse from Portugal’s highest point on the mainland to the ocean at Nazaré, while event materials emphasize autonomy, resilience, and navigation skills as essential parts of the challenge. That combination gives the race a very different identity from a standard trail ultra: it is not only about speed or climbing, but about managing sleep, weather, pacing, and decision-making over several days in winter conditions. For experienced ultrarunners, Terra de Gigantes offers a rare kind of event — a true country-crossing expedition with a clear narrative, from the heights of Serra da Estrela to the dramatic Atlantic finish.
