Gaelforce Great River Swim

Gaelforce Great River Swim is a downstream open-water race on the River Shannon, finishing in Lanesborough in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. With four distances, it suits everyone from first-time open-water swimmers to endurance athletes. The course is fully supported by kayakers, safety boats, and a medical team. Tow-floats are mandatory, and wetsuit rules depend on water temperature. It’s also the first event in the Gaelforce Great Swim Trilogy.

Beginner-friendly and ideal for first-timers. Swim with the current to the finish at Lanesborough.
Cut-off: 40 min

• 3.5 km
A solid mid-distance route with more time to enjoy the river’s bends. Best for swimmers with some open-water experience.
Cut-off: 1 h 30 min

• 5.8 km
A longer endurance swim that demands steady pacing and focus. For confident, experienced swimmers.
Wetsuit compulsory if water is ≤11°C.
Cut-off: halfway in 1 h 30 min

• 12 km
Ireland’s longest downstream swim — a true endurance challenge. Entry requires proven long-distance experience.
18+; proof of 3.9 km in the last year under 1:45 (skins: similar proof).
Cut-offs: 5.8 km in 2:15, final 5:00
