The race begins on the banks of the Rječina, with a bank building nearby, and ends at a 138m high plateau. To get there, participants must climb the 561 steps, built by Petar Kružić in 1531, with an additional 91m of elevation. The lower part of the stairway was later expanded to 538 steps, and a Baroque entrance hall in the form of a triumphal arch was added in the first half of the 18th century. Furthermore, four votive chapels were built by the steps, from the 15th to the 18th centuries, one chapel per century.
